The Authority was created and established by a private act of the State
Legislature. The governmental authority is a public corporation in perpetuity
under the corporate name of the Greater Dickson Gas Authority, and shall under
that name be a political subdivision of the State and a body politic and
corporate. The Authority is created for the purpose of planning, acquiring,
constructing, improving, furnishing, equipping, financing, owning, operating,
and maintaining gas systems for various types of gas, within or outside the
Region and such other utility systems as any gas utility is authorized by the
general laws of the State of Tennessee to own or operate.
The Authority is governed by a Board of Directors composed of five members
consisting of (i) the Mayor of the City of Dickson or the designee of the Mayor;
(ii) an elected member of the City of Dicksons governing body; (iii) two
individuals residing within the geographic boundaries of the Sam Houston Utility
District of Houston, Stewart, and Dickson Counties; (iv) one individual residing within the geographic region of the Authority.

The Authority was created to allow the City of Dickson and Sam Houston
Utility District to divest their respective natural gas systems and transfer the
assets and liabilities of their systems to the Authority. The Authority serves
natural gas to parts of Dickson, Cheatham, Houston, Montgomery and Stewart
Counties and eleven (11) incorporated Cities and Towns within the above counties
in Middle Tennessee. The Authority maintains 706 miles of distribution main
ranging in size from two (2) inch through twelve (12) inch. This distribution
network provides natural gas service over an area of approximately 131 square
miles to 15,965 service lines as of December 2008.
Natural gas is transported to the Authority for distribution by Tennessee Gas
Pipeline (TGP) and delivered into the distributions system through four (4)
connections to transmission mains owned by TGP. The natural gas is distributed
within our pipeline system through 61 regulator stations at pressures ranging
from twenty (20) psig to four hundred fifty (450) psig.
The Authority also operates a propane bulk delivery service to serve
customers where natural gas is not available, serving 2,600 customers in parts
of eight (8) counties including Dickson, Williamson, Hickman, Cheatham,
Montgomery, Houston, Stewart and Humphreys.
The Authority operates and manages its natural and propane gas operations
from 605 East Walnut Street in Dickson, Tennessee. At this location an eighty
thousand (80,000) square foot office and warehouse facility is located on 13.5
acres. In addition to our administrative offices and warehouse this facility
contains a showroom for gas equipment, with exception of central heating and air
systems, sold by the Authority. The Authority also installs and maintains
equipment for its natural and propane gas customers. We maintain a stock of many
replacement parts for equipment we sell and an area for equipment repairs that
cant be made in the field. Propane cylinders ranging from twenty (20) lb. grill
cylinders to one hundred (100) lb. cylinders are filled at this facility.
On May 1, 1995 the Authority
purchased the gas system owned by the Town of Erin, Tennessee located in Houston
County, Tennessee. The Authority previously supplied natural gas to the Town of
Erin through a master meter and Erin operated their own system. With the
purchase of the Erin system, the Authority acquired 20 miles of main line and
416 services.
